Canton man allegedly shot East Canton police officers

EAST CANTON – A Canton man is accused of shooting an East Canton police officer during a chase early Sunday morning.

Edward Irwin II is charged with attempted assault on a police officer, fleeing and eluding, and illegal drug possession, police said in a news release. He also has several warrants out for other crimes.

According to police, an officer pulled over a motorist at the corner of Wood and Nassau Streets at 12:05 a.m. when he heard gunshots about 100 yards away. The officer began pursuing a motorcycle traveling north on Wood Street.

The suspect turned around and shot the officer twice during the pursuit, police said. The officer was not hit.

The suspect slowed down and attempted to exit onto a gravel road when he lost control of his motorcycle. He remounted the motorcycle and headed south on State Route 44 back to East Canton, with Louisville Police and Stark County Sheriff's officers joining the pursuit.

The suspect lost control of his motorcycle again on South Wood Street and fled on foot. A Hartville sniffer dog helped track down the suspect and arrest him without incident, police said.

Irwin was treated at a local hospital and taken to the Stark County Jail. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed, authorities said.

Further details were not immediately available.
