Financial support for child crime investigations in Raleigh County

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Republican Del. Todd Kirby presented Raleigh County Sheriff Jim Canaday with a check for $8,000 on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to assist county authorities in investigating crimes against children.

According to Del. Kirby, the check comes from the legislature's discretionary funds.

Sheriff Canaday said crimes against children, including online crime, continue to be a scourge on society.

“I have to say that in the years that I've been on the force, I've been shocked at the number of crimes that are based on child abuse and the number of people that are actually trying to come here or lure our children somewhere else,” noted Sheriff Canaday. “It was shocking to me.”

He said the money would be used to help investigators track down criminals and prevent crimes against children, including online crime.

Del. Kirby said the check presented Tuesday would be the last one he will present as a state legislator, at least in the near future.

In May, Kirby was elected district judge of Raleigh County.
