Favorites, how to watch, more – NBC 6 South Florida

While the 2024 European Championship is underway in Europe, the American continent is meeting for its own major tournament.

Next on the calendar is the 2024 Copa America, which will feature teams from North America, South America and the Caribbean, as all matches will take place in the United States.

Lionel Messi is back to help Argentina defend their 2021 title. Neymar will be missing for 2021 runners-up Brazil, but Vinicius Jr. will be hoping for a breakthrough international tournament as he continues to thrive for Real Madrid.

Christian Pulisic and Co. will be looking to prove their strength against some of the top nations in the US men's national team, while Mexico desperately needs to regain its form.

From the spectator list to the teams and players to watch out for, here's everything you need to know about the 2024 Copa America:

What is the Copa America tournament?

The Copa America tournament is similar to the World Cup, but only includes teams from North and South America and the Caribbean. The teams compete in groups of four and play against each other in a round-robin format.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout round. From there, each match is played in a knockout system until the winner is crowned in the final.

When does the Copa America tournament take place?

The 2024 tournament begins on Thursday, June 20th and runs until the final on Sunday, July 14th.

The tournament's opening match will be between Argentina and Canada on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).

Where is the Copa America tournament taking place?

The USA will host the entire tournament. The final will take place in Miami, Florida.

How to watch and stream the Copa America tournament

The 2024 tournament can be watched and streamed in English on FOX Sports (FOX, FS1, FS2), while Univision and TUDN will broadcast and stream the games in Spanish.

What are the groups at the Copa America 2024?

Due to the overall quality, there is no specific “group of death” at the 2024 Copa America, but Group D may be the most exciting. Here is a look at all four groups:

Group A

  • Argentina
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Peru

Group B

  • Mexico
  • Jamaica
  • Ecuador
  • Venezuela

Group C

  • USA
  • Uruguay
  • Panama
  • Bolivia

Group D

  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Paraguay

Who are the favorites to win the Copa America 2024?

Due to the strength of their squads, Argentina and Brazil are likely to be the clear favorites to win the tournament.

Led by Messi, the Argentine squad is essentially similar to the team that won the 2022 World Cup. Lionel Scaloni is still the coach, while Julian Alvarez, Exequiel Palacio and Christian Romero have established themselves at club level since the triumph in Qatar.

Brazil, now coached by Dorival Junior, also had a team very similar to the one in Qatar. Some key names that were absent are Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Casemiro and Richarlison, while Endrick, Gabriel Martinelli, Savio and Ederson are potential breakout candidates.

Who are the underdog teams at the Copa America 2024?

If it's not Argentina or Brazil, then Uruguay and Colombia could be the biggest underdogs.

Uruguay does not have a standout goalkeeper, but Federico Valverde, Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo, Jose Maria Gimenez, Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur are more than enough to potentially topple the few bigger teams.

Colombia has the experienced David Ospina between the posts, but Luis Diaz, Jhon Duran, Daniel Munoz, Jefferson Lerma, Luis Sinisterra and Davinson Sanchez could act as spoilers if all goes well.

The underdog teams include the USMNT, Mexico and Ecuador, but they all have their weaknesses.

The USA has struggled to beat bigger teams under Gregg Berhalter, Mexico is still going through a turbulent phase, and Ecuador has a promising defensive structure but lacks game-winning forces in attack.
