Former Everton and LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan has explained his new, rather strange hairstyle.

Donovan's expert appearance on Fox Sports during France's match against Austria at the 2024 European Championship caused a stir on social media.

In fact, fans were surprised by the 42-year-old's new hairstyle. Donovan, who has long worn buzz cuts and crew cuts, appeared on the channel with a hairstyle that left large parts of his scalp exposed.

This prompted former Galaxy teammate Mike Magee to poke fun at Donovan on X (formerly Twitter), sharing the text exchange between the two.

Magee initiated the interaction with the message: “LD (Landon Donovan), check Twitter ASAP and probably fire your hairdresser.”

Donovan replied that he had undergone a hair transplant weeks ago.

He said, “Where were you 7 hours ago??? Had a hair transplant two weeks ago and was told the results wouldn't show on camera.”

When Magee asked if he could publish this exchange, Donovan replied, “Whatever, I deserve it.”

Donovan was a star of the US national team during his playing career, scoring 57 goals in 157 appearances.

Domestically, he is a legend of the LA Galaxy, but has also played for Bayer Leverkusen, Everton and Bayern Munich, among others.

With the group stages of the European Championship still in full swing, Donovan is likely to be back on Fox Sports in the coming days. The American may also serve as a pundit for the Copa America, which begins next week.

It will be interesting to see if Donovan wears a hat for his next appearance or opts for his own look.
