People who live and work nearby told Spectrum News they heard the shots.

“I heard some bangs and then I came here because my neighbor called me and said, 'Hey, there are some cops on Bruce B. Downs,'” said Peggy Junco-Collings, who lives in the Lakeview Villas neighborhood.

During the detectives' investigation, Regents Park Drive was closed from the entrance to this condominium to Bruce B. Downs.

La Petite Academy, which offers daycare, preschool and other programs for children, is located across from the entrance to Lakeview Villas.

“It was nerve-wracking,” said mother Serena Hamelin after picking up her one-year-old son.

La Petite was not involved in the shooting. Hamelin and Marielle Bellamy, who picked up their 1-year-old daughter Monday night, said the academy has been emailing and texting parents and keeping them updated on the situation. They said the fact that the shooting occurred so close to homes and businesses was disturbing.

“I find it a little bit scary because a lot of neighborhoods and kids are taking to the streets,” Bellamy said.

“There are a lot of people, a lot of families, a lot of community,” Hamelin said of the area. “It's driving you crazy, especially with everything – there just seems to be more of it. It's driving me crazy, especially with my little one.”

The sheriff's office is asking anyone who was in the area of Regents Park Dr. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. at the time of the shooting and may have seen anything related to the case.
