Viral Brandon Aiyuk video gets Steelers rumor mill going

Brandon Aiyuk has been linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers since the beginning of the offseason. After Omar Khan traded WR Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, rumors about a possible trade between the Steelers for a wide receiver skyrocketed.

We thought these rumors would die down after the 2024 NFL Draft. Pittsburgh selected a receiver with its third-round pick and seemed content to go into Steelers training camp with what they have at the position.

Then Aiyuk resurfaced in the news cycle. The 49ers' star receiver recently posted a video on Tiktok. During a video chat with new Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, Aiyuk can clearly be heard saying, “They said they don't want me back… I swear.”

It was recently reported that the 49ers would offer Aiyuk an average of $26 million per season in annual salary if he signed a new contract extension, but the two parties were in negotiations and no extension was reached. Now it seems that one of the league's best receivers could be back on the market if San Francisco is willing to trade him.

There's no doubt that Brandon Aiyuk would provide a boost to Pittsburgh's new-look offense. Although Aiyuk has yet to earn Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors, the former first-round pick has improved each year and just came off the best season of his NFL career.

In 2023, Aiyuk played in 16 games and gained 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns on just 105 attempts. The result was a staggering 12.8 yards per attempt and a 71.4 percent passer rate on attempts. The 49ers quarterbacks also posted a 124.0 passer rating when targeting Aiyuk last season.

Aiyuk has averaged nearly 1,000 yards per season since entering the league and was the best pass receiver on a 49ers team loaded with talent last year, more than enough reason for Steelers fans to beg the team to make a trade.

Aiyuk's future with the 49ers already seemed in doubt when the team selected wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round and contract extension talks fell through. Now, Aiyuk's latest social media post seems to be confirmation that he's on his way out.

The 49ers still have Aiyuk's situation under control for the 2024 season. The talented receiver is set to play on the fifth-year option, and a franchise tag is not out of the question in 2025. However, San Francisco is in a major financial bind heading into next offseason, and keeping Aiyuk will be a challenge.

Following Aiyuk's social media post, Daniel Jeremiah mentioned Pittsburgh as an ideal landing spot. He's not alone, as many fans and media members believe this would be a perfect match.

Don't expect a move to happen right away, but it appears Brandon Aiyuk has had a “falling out” with his current team and a transfer isn't out of the question. You can bet the Steelers rumor mill will be churning until we know more.
