Children among nine injured in Michigan water park shooting | Gun violence news

Eight-year-old is in critical condition after attack at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad Park in a Detroit suburb.

At least nine people, including two young children, were injured in shootings at a municipal water park in the US state of Michigan, officials said.

An attacker opened fire on Saturday at a wading pool in a Detroit suburb where families had gathered to escape the summer heat.

Police concluded the incident was random shooting and pursued a suspect to a home, where the man inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

An eight-year-old boy is said to be in critical condition after being shot in the head.

The boy's mother is also in critical condition with injuries to her stomach and leg, and his four-year-old brother is in stable condition with a leg injury.

The other six victims, all 30 years old or older, were in stable condition. They included a woman and her husband and a 78-year-old man.

A man got out of a vehicle outside the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan, around 5 p.m. (21:00 GMT) and fired about 30 shots from a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, reloading several times, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at a news conference.

A witness reported that the attacker apparently used two handguns during his attack, although this has not yet been confirmed.

“People were falling, getting hit and trying to escape,” Bouchard said. “Terrible things that we have all unfortunately seen far too often in our police work.”

The attacker “apparently was in no hurry. He just calmly walked back to his car,” the sheriff added.

The suspect did not live in Rochester Hills and investigators do not yet know why he went to the wading pool.

Officials did not release the suspect's name, but police described him as a 42-year-old white man and said officers believed he lived with his mother.

At the water playground, officers found a pistol, three empty magazines and 28 cartridge cases. At home, they found a semi-automatic rifle and another pistol, which the suspect presumably used to commit suicide.

Rochester Hills is located about 30 miles (50 km) north of Detroit.

The neighboring community of Oxford Township, also in Oakland County, was the scene of a mass school massacre in 2021, in which then-15-year-old student Ethan Crumbley killed four students and injured six other students and a teacher at Oxford High School.

The Oxford Resiliency Center, created to help victims of the 2021 Oxford High School shooting, remains operational and available to help community members, police said.

“Our greatest hope, at least at this point, is that all injured victims make a speedy recovery,” Bouchard said. “None of us … expected that we would be entering Father's Day weekend with such a tragedy that will forever deeply affect the families.”
