Shooting in Rochester Hills, Michigan: At least 9 people, including an 8-year-old, shot in recreation center, suspect “arrested,” police say

Police responded to the scene of a shooting at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

At least nine people were shot in a recreational area in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Saturday. A suspect was arrested near the scene, police said during a press conference.

“Nine, maybe 10” victims were injured by gunshot wounds following the incident at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

Rochester Hills is located about 27 miles north of Detroit.

One of the victims was eight years old, Bouchard said. He could not provide any information on the age of the other victims.

The first emergency call alerting police to the incident came in at around 5:11 p.m. Authorities found a pistol and three empty magazines at the scene.

The suspect fired “possibly 28 times” and is being held at an address near the crime scene, Bouchard said.

The sheriff said the suspect arrived at the water playground, got out of a vehicle and opened fire. It appears to be a random incident.

“We had an active shooter at the Auburn wading pool in Rochester Hills,” the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post before the press conference. “This is still an active crime scene and we may have arrested the suspect nearby, but we have asked people to stay away from the area for now.”

CNN has reached out to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office for more information.
