One dead after police-involved shooting in South Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — One person died in a police-involved shooting at a South Jordan park on Saturday, according to a news release from South Jordan Police.

Police said officers were called to Skye Park after receiving a call about a “suspicious person” allegedly looking through car windows.

“The individual was encountered in a nearby park and pulled out a knife when approached by officers,” the police press release said.

Officers reportedly used “less lethal force” in an attempt to arrest the suspect because he did not cooperate in speaking with officers, police said.

“After several attempts to get him to obey failed, the perpetrator approached the officers with the knife and was shot,” police said.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police said the investigation is expected to continue until Saturday afternoon and that the areas of Skye Drive and Skye Park will remain closed during the investigation.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Officer Involved Critical Incident Team and the officers involved have been placed on leave, according to police.

Police did not initially provide any information about when the incident occurred.

Further information is not currently available.
