Suspect confesses to attempted murder of Deputy Fontonet and several robberies

The suspect involved in the shooting of Deputy Deteryon Fontonet was booked into the Joint Processing Center for assault on an officer.

According to investigators, 23-year-old D'Anthony Simms-Coleman confessed to several robberies and the attempted murder of Deputy Fontonet.

“Simms-Coleman was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail. He is charged with first-degree aggravated assault on a public officer. Additional charges of robbery and theft are pending at this time. Information regarding his court appearance and bail is not available at this time,” Constable Mark Herman said in a press release.

Herman gave an update on Deputy Fontonet's condition. He reported that he recently spoke with Deputy Fontonet, who is now resting at home and is expected to make a full recovery.

Deputy Fontonet still has bullet fragments in three different places in his body. Doctors will evaluate his condition at a later date and determine the best course of action, Herman said.

What happened?

Deputy Fontonet identified the suspect's vehicle after he allegedly robbed two Academy Sports and Outdoors stores with a fully automatic AR-15 pistol.

“One of the pistols, but it's a fully automatic AR-15 rifle,” said Constable Mark Herman. “It's a smaller version. It's about the same size. It's got a full AR-15 magazine in it.”

When the suspect refused to surrender, a chase ensued that ended at 5310 Slashwood Lane in Spring. The suspect exited his car and shot Deputy Fontonet in the face before fleeing into a relative's home.

“I saw our patrol car. It has 16 holes in it,” said Constable Mark Herman. “And there are even holes in the window of the car the officer was in.”

Auxiliary police surrounded the house and the suspect was eventually arrested. The suspect, a 23-year-old man, has not yet been named.

Deputy Fontonet was taken to Northwest Hospital where he will undergo facial surgery but is expected to survive.
