Man confesses to killing 3-year-old Erin Brunett | Crime/Police

RANKIN COUNTY, Mississippi — Murder suspect Daniel Callihan, 36, told reporters Friday that he killed 3-year-old Erin Brunett the day before after her mother, Callie Brunett, was murdered and her children, including 6-year-old Jalie Brunett, were kidnapped.

While being taken back to the Rankin County Jail on Friday, he told the media he was only taking medication for depression and confessed to the crime.

“Sober, no drugs in my system, I did it,” he said. “I have no reason for what I did. I just want to say that I was sober and I only took LexaPro – and then I stopped – and I was also diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.”

Callihan said he is on suicide watch but is not suicidal.

He told reporters, “I would kill myself” and that he would not contest the charges. He said he welcomed the death penalty. “For what I did, lethal injection is the easiest thing for me.”

Callihan claimed he had only been released from a mental institution for two weeks.

A second suspect, a woman named Victoria Cox, 32, was arrested along with Callihan on Thursday. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said she and Callihan had recently been in an intimate relationship.

Also on Friday, Rankin County announced the charges being filed against Callihan, including felony sexual assault and armed robbery. The number of charges for each count was not disclosed. TPSO said he is charged locally with at least one count of premeditated murder.

Cox, in turn, is charged with capital crimes and sexual assault.

According to Sheriff Edwards, no other suspects are currently being investigated at the scene.
