Will Maresca be given the time to succeed at Chelsea?

If Enzo Maresca becomes Chelsea manager, he will likely be given time as long as he delivers a “basic performance” and does not “shake up” the club's hierarchy too much, says Nizaar Kinsella, football news reporter for BBC Sport.

Leicester City boss Maresca, who led the Foxes to the 2023-24 Championship title, is currently in talks to succeed Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino left the club last week after just one season at Stamford Bridge, while Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard all took charge multiple times in the previous season.

Kinsella told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club: “They always said they wanted to give people time but then they never do. They wanted to be patient with him and give him a chance to settle in but he has to get on with everyone and not offend anyone.”

“Pochettino may have caused a bit too much unrest. We talked about the relationship with the owners and the structure – [sporting directors] Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart wanted to keep control. That will be the key. He needs to put in an average performance to get time and then not cause any trouble. He needs to try and convince with two things.

“Pochettino has actually not lived up to expectations. Last season they wanted to be in the top four – they could have accepted the Europa League and ended up in the Europa Conference League. He will have to try and push towards the Champions League. Many people may think that is very difficult but that will certainly be the aim for next season, especially after we have spent so much – we must not forget that and the owners are ambitious.

“It's becoming apparent that a five-year deal is on the table, so maybe that's a little bit of a hint. It's almost a return to a Graham Potter approach. They wanted Potter to be the man they could build with and now we're getting Maresca – he's going to build us up and make us a great club.”
