Wearing a dress made of sand was never going to be easy for Tyla – but for the 2024 Met Gala, she decided to do it.

The 22-year-old “Water” singer wore the custom-made Balmain number on the red carpet, and even though she had to be carried up the steps of the Met because she could barely move in the dress, she loved the look.

“I just love the outfit and how everything worked out,” Tyla said Fashion on the red carpet in her “out of the box” dress designed by Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing and his team.

However, the sculptural dress wasn't really functional beyond the photo moment on the carpet, and that meant something had to change once Tyla walked in to the party. While we can only imagine how many hours went into making the dress—a plaster body molding and an organza train completely covered in three shades of sand mixed with crystal studs—Rousteing cut off the entire bottom half as the couple went inside.

Yes, you read that right — he turned her dress into a mini dress by cutting it off with a pair of scissors given to him by Instagram fashion pro Eva Chen.

Rousteing shared the recent behind-the-scenes video on Instagram (which also showed Tyla once walking barefoot in the Met Museum) and carefully cutting off her legs while still wearing the dress.

Many viewers were amazed and cheered when Tyla's “second” (unofficial) look for the evening was revealed.
