Disney Adds New Writers to 'Space Mountain' Ride-Inspired Film

By Movieguide® staff

Disney has added writers Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec to the team working on a film adaptation of the popular ride “Space Mountain.”

Applebaum and Nemec previously worked on the Amazon spy series CITADEL and the Netflix adaptation of the animated series COWBOY BEBOP. The pair also wrote MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (2014) and WONDER PARK.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter revealed that “the story will be fully fleshed out and the ride will serve as inspiration.”

Some are wondering whether the film will even make it to the big screen since it has already been written by several authors.

ScreenRant reported that the project's script “was previously revised in 2020 after a version written by Max Landis was scrapped, after which it was announced that Joby Harold, who is also producing the film, would be writing the script.”

“Since the film's screenwriters have already been replaced twice, it remains to be seen whether Appelbaum and Nemec's script will receive the same treatment,” the outlet continued. “In addition, several other attraction-based films have also had problems getting off the ground, including abandoned projects such as 'It's a Small World', a 'Matterhorn' adaptation called THE HILL and a PIRATES reboot starring Margot the main role. “Robbie.”

Robbie recently confirmed that plans for another PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film have stalled.

“We had an idea and developed it a long time ago to have more of a female-led story – not quite female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we think would have been really cool.” But I guess , they don't want to do it,” said the BARBIE actress.

Some have suggested that Disney's reluctance to greenlight attraction-based films is due to the underperformance of previous projects at the box office, such as the 2023 HAUNTED MANSION adaptation. Movieguide® previously reported:

Disney's HAUNTED MANSION is the latest example of the entertainment giant's inability to captivate audiences, opening to just $24.2 million.

The $24.4 million represents one of the lowest starts among Disney's live-action remakes, or reimaginings of theme park attractions. HAUNTED MANSION did worse than experts expected, or at least predicted Great $30 million in its opening weekend.

The ongoing actors' strike also affected the release of the film. The star-studded cast — Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto — were unable to promote the film or attend the Disneyland premiere on July 15.

HAUNTED MANSION is another flop in Disney's string of cinematic failures. By the time summer began, Disney had done it has already lost an estimated $900 million. HAUNTED MANSION and the company's other summer release, ELEMENTAL, only added to the losses.
